Differentials and the slipper clutch
Where the drive actually goes: diff oil weights, ball diff tension, front and rear balance on 4WD, and setting a slipper properly.
The diffs decide what the car does the instant you touch the throttle, which makes them one of the most powerful tuning tools on the car and one of the least used, because changing one means opening it up. Do it on a maintenance evening, not at a race.
What a diff actually trades
A differential lets the inside and outside wheels turn at different speeds through a corner. How much it resists that difference is the tuning knob.
- A freer diff lets the wheels do their own thing. More steering, less forward drive, more likely to spin up the unloaded wheel.
- A tighter diff ties the wheels together. More forward drive, less steering, and the car pushes wide under power.
Everything below is a way of setting that resistance.
Gear diffs and oil weight
A gear diff's resistance comes from the silicone oil inside it, and thicker oil means a tighter diff. The same labelling problem as shock oil applies — a manufacturer's number is not a standard — and the range is wide: thousands of centistokes rather than tens.
On a 2WD car there is one diff and one decision: thicker for forward bite out of slow corners, thinner for rotation and steering.
On a 4WD car you have up to three, and they do different jobs:
- Front — thicker adds stability and understeer, especially on power. Very thick front oil makes the car push wide out of corners. Thinner frees up steering at the cost of some drive.
- Centre — controls how drive is shared front to rear. Thicker sends more drive forward, which adds stability and traction. This is the one to change on a low-grip day.
- Rear — thicker gives forward bite and can make the car looser on entry; thinner calms the rear and reduces exit rotation.
A leaking diff is not a setup, it is a fault. If you cannot reproduce a setting between meetings, check the seals before you change the oil weight.
Ball diffs
Common on 2WD on-road and some buggies, tuned by tension rather than oil. The target is the same as a shock rebuild's: smooth and repeatable.
Set it just tight enough that it does not slip under full power on the highest grip you will see that day, and no tighter. A slipping ball diff destroys itself quickly, and you will feel it as a car that goes nowhere out of corners. Check by holding the spur and turning a wheel — it should turn smoothly with even resistance and no notches. Any notchiness means the balls or rings are pitted and it needs rebuilding, not adjusting.
Spools and locked diffs
A spool has no differential action at all: maximum drive, minimum steering, nothing to maintain. Standard on some on-road front ends and on crawlers, where you want both wheels driven regardless. If you are considering locking a diff to solve a drive problem, be aware you are also removing a tuning tool.
The slipper clutch
The slipper is a friction joint between the spur and the transmission that lets them slip briefly under a sudden load. It does two jobs, and it is worth being clear which one you are tuning for.
Protection. It absorbs the shock of a hard landing or a wheel that suddenly regains grip, which would otherwise strip a spur or a gear. On a high-power car this alone justifies it.
Traction. By slipping on launch it softens the delivery, which stops the car squatting and spinning the tyres out of slow corners.
Setting it:
- Start with it loose enough to obviously slip, then tighten in small increments — an eighth of a turn.
- On a high-grip surface you want it a little looser; on low grip, tighter. This surprises people, but on high grip there is more shock load to absorb.
- The test is a hard launch: it should slip perceptibly for a moment and then drive. If you cannot hear it at all, it is locked; if the car takes a beat to go anywhere, it is too loose.
- A slipper that has been slipping hard all day will have got hot and its setting will have drifted. Re-check it rather than assuming.
Locked solid, a slipper is just a heavy spur mount and every drivetrain shock goes straight into the gears.
Maintenance is part of the setting
Diff and slipper settings only mean something if the parts are in good order. Rebuild the diffs with fresh oil once a season, check for leaks whenever the car is apart, and replace slipper pads before they glaze. Log the oil weights you used against the car in the maintenance log — this is exactly the sort of thing nobody remembers three months later, and you cannot read it off the outside of a gearbox.
