Reading the car: turning a handling complaint into a change
How to work out what the car is actually doing, which end to change, and why one adjustment at a time is not just caution.
"It won't turn" is not a setup problem, it is three different setup problems depending on where in the corner it happens. Getting good at setup is mostly getting good at describing what the car did.
Split the corner into three
Every handling complaint belongs to one of these, and the fix is different for each:
- Entry — from braking to the apex, while you are still slowing.
- Mid-corner — steady steering, neither slowing nor accelerating.
- Exit — from the apex to the straight, on the throttle.
Before changing anything, drive a few laps and decide which one you are complaining about. If the answer is "all of them", it is usually mid-corner, and the other two are consequences.
The rule that makes setup make sense
Stiffen an end and it loses grip; soften an end and it gains grip.
A stiffer end transfers weight faster and gives the tyres less time to work. That single idea covers springs, sway bars, damping and to a large extent ride height, and it is why almost every change has an equal and opposite version at the other end. Not enough steering can be fixed by giving the front more grip or by taking grip from the rear, and which you pick depends on whether the car is generally short of grip or generally has too much.
Working from the complaint
Understeer on entry — the car will not turn in. Try more front toe-out, a softer front spring, or less front rebound. Also check the obvious: are you braking too deep and simply overloading the front tyres?
Understeer mid-corner — steady-state push. Front camber and ride height first, then the front sway bar or spring. This is where geometry pays off.
Understeer on exit — the car will not rotate under power. Usually the rear has too much grip or the diff is locking too hard; thinner rear diff oil or a softer rear spring.
Oversteer on entry — the back steps out as you brake and turn. Less rear droop, a softer rear spring, or more rear damping. Also check your brake strength; too much rear brake bias does this on its own.
Oversteer mid-corner — softer rear or stiffer front, more rear ride height.
Oversteer on exit — the back breaks loose on power. Thicker rear diff oil, a softer rear spring for more traction, or a smoother throttle. On a high-grip track this is often gearing: too much torque too suddenly.
Traction rolling — the car tips over in a corner. Lower it, take out some camber, stiffen the sway bars, or move weight down and inward. Softening the car makes this worse, not better.
Bouncing or skating over bumps — usually too much damping or not enough travel. Thinner oil, more droop, more ride height.
One change at a time
This is the part everyone knows and nobody does. Two changes at once and you learn nothing: if the car improves you do not know which one did it, and if it gets worse you do not know which one to undo.
Run the car. Change one thing. Run it again on the same tyres, roughly the same pack state, on the same track condition. Then decide.
Track condition is the confounding factor. A track picks up grip through the day as rubber goes down, dries out, and heats up. A change that looks like an improvement at 2 pm may be the track, not you. This is why the fast drivers change less than you would expect during a meeting.
Learn to overshoot deliberately
If you cannot feel a change, make it twice as big on purpose. Going too far and coming back teaches you what the adjustment actually does far quicker than creeping up on it in tiny steps and feeling nothing. Do this in practice, not in qualifying.
Keep the record
Note the change and what happened, on the setup sheet for that car and track — including the changes that made it worse. Half of setup knowledge is a list of things that do not work at your local track, and that list is only useful if you wrote it down.
